California has enacted AB 3074 (2020) to obligate the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection to adopt regulations mandating an “ember-resistant” Zone 0 — the first 0 to 5 feet around a structure — to be cleared of combustible materials and overly flammable plants. Under draft and proposed rules, within that 5-foot zone homeowners must eliminate wood mulch, dead or dense vegetation, and combustible fencing near the walls. As of August 19th, 2026, there has been some updates to this CA Code. This article is presented by the California Board of Forestry & Fire Protection.
